Opposition slept, now they must lie in a thorny bed

By Ofwono Opondo – 19th-25th July 2010

Firstly, let me thank Uganda Correspondent once again for asking us [NRM] to respond to some of the issues raised about the [present] Electoral Commission [EC] and [give] our very well considered view as people supervising the whole country. (more…)

IPC must wait for its own “credible” EC, says govt

By Timothy Nsubuga – 19th-25th July 2010

EC boss Kiggundu

The ruling NRM government has vehemently defended what it called the “administrative” process that led to the reappointment in 2009 of the Electoral Commission [EC] Chairman Eng. Badru Kiggundu.

The legitimacy of the present Electoral Commission has caused considerable political controversy in the run up to next year’s general elections.  Uganda’s main opposition parties under their Inter Party Cooperation [IPC] umbrella have consistently argued that the Kiggundu-led electoral body is totally incompetent and openly biased in favour of Museveni’s ruling NRM-O party. Kampala bombs “good for Museveni”; says analyst

By Justin Tibenda – 19th-25th July 2010

7/11 bomb scene

The July 11th bombs that ripped through the uneasy tranquillity of Kampala could, “in a strange way”, have been the best thing to have happened to President Museveni in nearly two years; says a Makerere University Political and Security Analyst.

Located a few kilometres from the shores of the great Lake Victoria, Uganda’s capital city Kampala has been the epicentre of many of Uganda’s greatest political struggles since the tiny East African country won its independence from Britain in 1962. (more…)

The Ogole series: The final interview

19th-25th July 2010

UC:  Colonel, you have spoken at length about many things that you associate with Museveni’s government.  What do you think is the remedy now?

Col. Ogole:  The short answer to your question should simply be that enough is enough!  I am happy to report now that many of the practical political challenges that Museveni is facing today, and will no doubt face in the very near future, were partly because many Ugandans like me adopted that silent approach as a way of keeping the possibility of the dictator’s reprisals at a safe distance.  It is now too late for Museveni; he is now politically naked. Bomb blasts rock Kampala, scores dead

By Our Staff Writer – 12th-18th July 2010

It was supposed to be a night of sporting celebration across the globe as the FIFA world cup drew to a dramatic close in South Africa.  Someone, somewhere, however, had other sinister ideas and ruined the party; at least for many Ugandans.  On the same night of the world cup finals, the Ugandan capital Kampala was rocked by multiple bomb blasts that ripped through Kampala’s skyline.  (more…)
