Mao mourns death of DP’s last founder member

By Sharon S. Tibenda

The last of the six men who founded the Democratic Party, Uganda’s oldest party over fifty years ago, has died.

Mzee Louis Tyaba, a veteran politician of Uganda’s pre-independence political struggles, succumbed to cancer on Friday 12th November.  Mr. Nobert Mao, DP’s present President General, said “…the hallmark of his life was courage and humility. He was so unassuming”, Mao added.

Mao also said Mzee Tyaba was a principled politician.  “…Given a choice between power and principle, he always chose principle. The Democratic Party has lost a key pillar and we will miss him deeply”, Mao said.

Perhaps thinking of the factionalism that is threatening to tear DP into pieces, and his own uphill struggle to become president, Mao added that “…in these challenging times, Mzee Tyaba’s fatherly counsel and support is more needed than ever. Death is indeed shameless! Why now when we need the moral compass that Mzee Tyaba represents most?”

But the DP leader was also resolute in his determination to match to state house.  “…We march on in the faith that his spirit lives in us.  We shall fear not”, Mao declared.  END.
