Walk-to-Work leaders face ‘house arrest’

18th April 2011:- THE leaders of ‘Activists for Change’, the political pressure group behind the ‘Walk-to-Work’ protests, as well as political party leaders like Dr. Kizza Besigye and Norbert Mao, may be put under intermittent ‘house arrest’ to stop them leaving their homes to Walk-to-Work, Uganda Correspondent can reveal.
A reliable police source, the same one who provided us with a conclusive link between the ‘Kiboko Squad’ and the police force, has again told Uganda Correspondent that the Inspector General of Police Maj. General Kale Kayihura has already ordered his top commanders to make sure all the “ring leaders” are blocked before they leave their homes on Monday 18th.
In particular, our source said, Gen. Kayihura is most interested in stopping FDC Party President Dr. Kizza Besigye from leaving his residence in Kasangati. The [Gayaza] road from Kasangati to Kampala city centre that Dr. Besigye attempted to walk through last week was a beehive of activity as the police and army battled opposition supporters who had joined Besigye in his walk.
Dr. Besigye was shot and wounded in the arm [on Thursday 14th] as he attempted to walk to his office at FDC Headquarters in Najjanankumbi on Entebbe road. Yesterday, he was however allowed to walk to St Andrews Church in Gayaza where he attended Palm Sunday mass. Addressing his supporters after Sunday mass, the FDC leader declared that, “…no amount of intimidation or blockade by the state will stop the walk-to-work campaign from taking place”.
He also said the intimidation Museveni is using “…is unbecoming of a head of state”. Dr. Besigye and other opposition leaders who were arrested last week were charged with varied offences ranging from engaging unlawful assemblies, resisting arrest, and disobeying lawful orders among others.
