A serving UPDF General has become the first senior military officer in this election campaign season to declare that he will salute whoever wins.

The officer, a Major General by rank, made his declaration on condition of strict anonymity in an exclusive interview with Uganda Correspondent at Nile Resort Hotel in Jinja on Saturday 23rd.

Dr. Kizza Besigye warned govt against election theft

Presidential candidates for the 2011 general elections are to be nominated today and tomorrow at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.

The candidates so far cleared for nomination are incumbent President and NRM flag bearer Yoweri Museveni, IPC’s flag bearer Dr. Kizza Besigye, UFA’s Beti Kamya, and PPP’s Jaberi Bidandi Ssali.  DP’s Nobert Mao and UPC’s Olara Otunnu are yet to have their supporters’ signatures verified by the Electoral Commission but are expected to be nominated. Govt steps up phone and email tapping

The government’s security services have stepped up their campaign to intercept telephone and email communications, Uganda Correspondent can exclusively reveal.

According to a source within the security services, the heightened interception activities are normal during election time.  “…This is just a natural reaction to the challenges that the election period is throwing at us”, said the government spy.

He said internally, they are particularly interested in knowing what the more militant political leaders and activists discuss amongst themselves. (more…)


Ssuubi 2011 is Buganda’s IPC – Besigye

Forum for Democratic Change party President Dr. Kizza Besigye, who is also the IPC’s flag bearer for the 2011 elections, has said Ssuubi 2011 is Buganda’s IPC.

Speaking to Uganda Correspondent by phone after he was cleared to be nominated as a presidential candidate, Dr. Besigye said “…Ssuubi is the IPC of Buganda.  We have now incorporated them into the IPC family agitating for free and fair elections and democratic change for the very first time in our country’s history”. ICC confirms Bemba charges, is Museveni safe?

Charged with war crimes

The International Criminal Court’s [ICC] appellate chamber on 19th Oct confirmed charges brought against Jean-Pierre Bemba, a former Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) government official charged with war crimes.

Bemba allegedly committed the crimes in the neighbouring Central African Republic [CAR].  His alleged war crimes included rape, murder and pillaging.
